The boy stared at this man who had knocked him over and was now carrying him along the street. “The dove’s name is Armand and he possesses the soul of my father,” said the boy. “So I could not eat him.” Mozart, who was not easily astounded, stopped and found himself on the Ringstrasse at noon with a bleeding boy in his arms while a mounted Royal Guardsman loomed up, lifting his quirt threateningly as he ordered them gone instanter: it seemed the whole boulevard was being cleared to accommodate the passage of the Apostolic and paranoid King of Hungary, in town to sign “documents.” So Mozart saluted and hurried off, still carrying the boy who called out, “Farewell, Armand. Meet me in Heaven!”
